Biophilia

sasplin6

Plants have been known to invoke positive emotions. Results have been shown through numerous studies, particularly the study from Copenhagen who collaborated with Japan and found that plants reduce stress and enhance coping mechanisms. Biophilia is a desire between humans and nature. Plants in the built environment lower blood pressure and heart rate which make them particularly beneficial for healthcare environments; care-homes, hospitals, surgeries etc.

Benefits of biophilia

Outdoor features have been used as a "relief" in stressful situations. Biophilia has become the new approach to incorporate the positive experiences of nature into the built environment. The Living Building Challenge and The Nine Foundations of a Healthy Building have both incorporated biophilia within their projects which have impacted mood, lower stress levels and support the the sleep cycle.

Health benefits

When our skin is exposed to the sunlight, we gain Vitamin D which is a vital nutrient that prevents bone loss, reduces the risk of heart disease, weight gain and different types of cancers. Previous studies have displayed that bright light is effective for reducing depression symptoms.
